The newest section of the Poudre River Trail was officially opened on Saturday, June 11, 2005 during a ribbon cutting ceremony. This section starts at Weld County Road 13 (county line) about a ½ mile south of Hwy 392 in western Windsor and travels in an easterly direction for 2 miles where it connects to previously completed trail near Eastman Park in Windsor. Parking is available in the lot adjacent to the trail on the east side of WCR 13. Trail users can now travel a distance of 12 miles between Windsor and 71 st Avenue in Greeley. This section has mildly hilly terrain, but is easily traveled whether you are walking or cycling and provides access to the Frank State Wildlife area where there are opportunities for fishing and wildlife watching. Along with the abundant wildlife in this area, beautiful views of the river, bluffs, and arroyos greet you around each bend and over each hill. As with other sections of the Poudre Trail, the views are different when you turn around to go the other direction.
A section of the trail east of 71 st Avenue in Greeley will be built this summer. Additional sections are planned west of WCR 13 in Windsor and east of 59 th Avenue in Greeley in the near future. Additional contributions of cash are needed to build these sections. For more information on how you can contribute click on this link or call the trail office at (970) 336-4044. Duran Family Provides Land for Trail Connection Thanks to the community spirit of the Duran family, Poudre River Trail Corridor, Inc. will be able to complete a vital link in the trail connecting the Trail west of 71 st Avenue in Greeley to the eastern section. Earlier this year a piece of trail was built west of 59 th Avenue but it couldn't be opened because it came to an abrupt end before it could connect with the trail at 71 st Avenue. But now, with the recent acquisition of the trail easement across the Duran property, the trail organization will finish this section this summer. This project will allow trail users to travel all the way from Island Grove Park in Greeley to the Weld County line in Windsor, a distance of nearly 18 miles, although a portion of this route is on F Street and 59 th Avenue from Rover Run Dog Park to the new section west of 59 th Avenue. The trail board continues to seek opportunities to construct trail in this area that will move the route away from the street. The Duran Family section is being built with money from a State Trails grant funded through the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund. Local matching funds for this project come from private contributions.
