Great news for the Poudre River Trail Corridor! The City of Greeley and Larimer County have both been selected as finalists for the Great Outdoors Colorado River Initiative Grant! The City of Greeley's proposal would create additional Open Space lands along the river and create additional recreational opportunities. Larimer County's application focuses on extending the trail from River Bluffs Open Space 1 mile north as well as working with Fort Collins to construct the I-25 underpass. The City of Greeley and Larimer County will work together for the final application, creating a very competitive regional partnership.
The Poudre River Trail now has community events to encourage people to experience the trail. This Spring the trail held the 1st Trail-athlon and in the fall was the inaugural Poudre River Trail Challenge.

The Poudre Trail-athlon is a 'Triathlon with a twist'. Participants take part in as many of the 9 event stations as they like in a self-paced morning of fun. From activities that will get the heart pumping such as the bike ride and fun run, to more relaxed activities like bird watching and chalk art, there is something for everyone!
Participants who complete at least 3 events receive a goodie bag and an event t-shirt! Along with that refreshments, entertainment and some games of chance are available to everyone who comes! Best of all - IT'S FREE!! The event will be held in May every year at the Poudre Learning Center and we can't wait to build on the success in 2012!

The Trail-athlon was a great success. We had great weather and a great crowd. The kids enjoyed the sidewalk chalk drawing and the scavenger hunt. Lots of people enjoyed the climbing wall and bird watchers were treated to an impressive display by the bald eagles. A special "Thanks" to all of the volunteers that helped to make it all go smoothly!
The Challenge Event has two parts - Pack the Trail and Challenge the Trail: You can participate in one or both, but everyone shoud get involved in this super fun and hilarious event. Pack the Trail involves beginning at Island Grove Park and travelling out on the trail in any appropriate form of travel. Costumes and unique forms of travel are encouraged! Prizes are awarded! Help us set a record every year for the most number of people on the Trail in one hours' time.
For the more adventurous types, the Challenge the Trail portion provides a fun obstacle course run beginning at Poudre Ponds and ending at the center of the event. Of course there is a mud pit involved that provides a fun challenge for the runners and an entertaining spectacle for the viewers. Back at Island Grove, entertainment and food are provided with beverages available for purchase. In 2012 we will build on the success by having vendors, games, and more fun at Island Grove! This annual event is held in September to wrap up the Summer season for the trail.

The Poudre River Challenge was a great success. We had a splashing good time. A lot of folks and their kids (and their dogs) dressed up in fun costumes for the occasion. The mud pit was everything participants and watchers hoped for - and probably more! We hope to build on the success of 2011 and add more to the event and race next year! Thanks to everyone that took part, and especially to all the hard work of the volunteers who made it possible!
